The birth of Tenth Guru Gobind Singh is known to Sikhs as Guru Gobind Singhs prakash, meaning " manifestation of spiritual light" and his birthday celebration is known as gurpurab, meaning "commemorating the guru."

Guru Gobind Singh's birth took place on the 23rd day of the Nanakshahi month Poh, on 7 Sudi, or the 7th day of waxing moon, in the year 1723 of the Vikram Samvat calendar. The Western Julian calendar in use at the time determined his birth to be December 22, 1666.

In 1988 Pal Singh Purewal developed the Nanakshahi calendar whose months are named for those in scripture of Guru Granth Sahib. The Nanakshahi calendar was an attempt to fix gurpurab dates to the modern day western Gregorian calendar and sparked ongoing controversy. Dating has undergone several revisions to allow for fluctuations in the Eastern calendar and consequently was amended in 2003, and again in 2010, and continues to foster debate. For a time Guru Gobind Singh's birth had been designated as January 6th but later was amended to January 5th. In 2010 the date was further amended so that the tenth guru's birth was observed twice in 2011, Jan 11th and again December 31st.

The time difference between the East and West also seems to be a factor in specifying dates. Using a Julian to Gregorian calendar conversion calculator I found that December 22, 1666 converts to January 1, 1667 A.D. Since India is ahead of The USA by 9 - 13 hours, depending on location, all night celebrations make sense so that Sikhs around the are observing Guru Gobind Singh's gurpurab together, as December 31st in the USA is January 1st in India.

Guru Gobind Singh's birth may be celebrated from December 31, 2011 through January 1, 2012, or according to the Nanakshahi fixed calendar may be celebrated on January 5, 2012 and again at the end of the year on New Years Eve December 31, 2012.
