Goddess Kanyakumari Story Worship Kumari Amman and Devi Kannyakumari

Goddess Kanyakumari is one of the forms of Mother Goddess Shakti in Hinduism. As Kanya Kumari, She is the virgin goddess. Both Kanya and Kumari means virgin. The popular belief is that she took the form of Kannyakumari to annihilate demon Banasura. Another legend has that she still remains in this form in the Kanyakumari Temple in Tamil Nadu in Southern tip of India due a broken marriage promise.

Demon Banasura had attained a boon that a virgin girl will only kill him. The demon believed that he could easily overpower a young virgin. After getting the boon, Banasura defeated the Devas and started numerous Adharmic activities.

Vishnu advised the Devas to pray to Goddess Shakti to find a solution. Goddess Shakti promised the Devas that She will restore Dharma by annihilating Banasura.

Goddess Shakti then appeared as a beautiful young girl on earth. Banasura who came to know about the beautiful girl decided to take her away forcibly. Goddess Kannyakumari easily overpowered the army that was sent to take her away.

Banasura sent numerous armies and demons overpower the Goddess. But all of them failed.

Finally, Banasura himself went into war with the Goddess. After a fierce battle, Goddess Kanyakumari used the Chakrayudham (disc) and killed the demon.

A legend associated with above story states that Shiva who came to know about the beauty of the Goddess Kanyakumari wanted to marry her in this form. But if the marriage takes place, She will no longer be a virgin and will not be able to kill Banasura.

To stop the marriage, Devas approached Sage Narada, who played a trick on Shiva. The marriage party was to reach Kanyakumari in South India at a particular time. The marriage party reached the vicinity on time but Sage Narada took the form of a cock and crowed. Shiva thought he had missed the auspicious time and returned.

Goddess Kanyakumari waited for Shiva for a long time. When Shiva did not turn up, She became furious and threw out all ornaments, vessels and food that was prepared for the marriage. Whatever the goddess threw out became seashells and sand. The abundance of colored seashells and sand at Kannyakumari Beach in Tamil Nadu in India is attributed to this legend.

Goddess Kanyakumari is worshipped as Kumari Amman and Devi Kannyakumari at the famous temple in Kannyakumari in Tamil Nadu.

lalita lalitha tripura sundari
Goddess Lalita or Lalitha Tripura Sundari devi and the red Goddess, is one of the most powerful manifestations of Goddess Shakti. Goddess Shakti incarnated as Lalita to demolish the demon called Bhandasura. Bhandasura was a demon formed from the ashes of Manmadha or Kama deva, the God of Love and seduction.

Legend of Lalita avatara – Significance of Lalitha Tripura Sundari incarnation:
When Lord Shiva was performing severe Tapas (penance), Manmadha tried to disturb him by aiming the arrows of seduction. Lord Shiva was disturbed greatly and with a deep anger opened his third eye and destroyed Manmadha into ashes. Shiva Gana Sevaks collected the ashes of Kama Deva and drew a portrait of a man. With a single glance of Lord Shiva on that portrait of ashes, it came alive. As we know, Lord Shiva is called as Bhola Shankar, blessed the live form of the ashes, which became demon called Bhandasura.

Blessed by Lord Shiva, Bhandasura started to show his real characteristics of a demon. He harassed Sadhus (saints) and occupied all the lokas including Swarga Loka (the Heaven). To get rid of demon Bhanda, Lord Indra (the King of Gods and Swarga Adhipathi) observed a Yagna (sacrifice) to please the Mother Goddess. Pleased with Indras Yagna, Goddess Shakti appeared as Sri Lalitha Devi sitting on Sri Chakra.

Sri Lalitha Devi demolished the demon Bhandasura and his original form of Manmadha or Kama was restored. The whole episode of Lalita and Bhandasura is explained as ‘Bhandasura Vadha in Puranas.

Importance of Lalita Tripura Sundari:
Goddess Lalita represents the Panchabhuta (five basic elements) of the Universe. Panchabhutas are – air, water, fire, earth and space (Vayu, Jala, Agni, Bhumi and Akasha). Lalitha Devi is also associated with Sri Chakra, the ultimate Chakra representing the origin and existence of the universe.

Chitragupta Puja Pooja Aarti Katha in Hindi चित्रगुप्त पूजा कथा Chitragupta Bhagwan Katha Prayer

According to Hinduism, Brahma is the creator of the universe. He has created plants, animals, sea, mountains and the human being. Mythology states that humans created from the 'mouth' portion of Brahma were Brahmins, those from arms were 'Kshatriyas', those from the thighs were 'Vaishyas' and those from the feet were 'Shudras'. He asked 'Surya' to take care and protect the universe and himself went into deep meditation for ten thousand of years.

Thereafter when he opened his eyes he saw an illustrious man with broad shoulders, eyes like a lotus, long neck and carrying a pen and inkpot in the hands. Brahma asked that man who he was. The man replied that he was born out of Brahma and asked to give him a name and allocate duties. Brahma told him that as he was born out of his body (kaya) he would be classed as 'Kayastha' and he would be called by the name of 'Chitragupt' on the earth. He was asked by Brahma to perform his duties of keeping an account of every person good and bad deeds in the offices of Dharma Raj, supposed to be situated in 'Yampuri'.

Chitragupta was also blessed to produce his progency. Thus as the story goes 'Chitragupta' was the progenitor of us, the Kayasthas, and it is therefore our duty to worship him and offer our Prayers.

Hindu Mythology believes that the entire world, that was created by Lord Bramha, the Creator. Lord Bramha first created 16 Sons from various parts of his own body. Shree Chitraguptjee, his 17th creation, is believed to be the creation from Lord Bramha's belly. Thus, Shree Chitraguptjee is the divine incarnation in human form. Called Kayastha since he is the only one created in entirety [Kaya] from the Lord Bramha's body.

There is a legend behind worshipping Lord Chitragupta. Shree Chitraguptjee is the divine incarnation in human form and is called Kayastha for the reason of being the only one created in entirety from the Lord Bramha’s body.

People of the Kayastha community offer puja to Lord Chitragupt for world peace, justice, knowledge and literacy. These are the four primary virtues depicted by the form of Shree Chitraguptjee.

This is also called Dawaat (Inkpot) puja. The books and pen are worshipped on this occasion. This symbolizes that study is very important in the life of a Kayastha. The Duty Of Chitragupt Ji Maharaj Hindu Dharam is based on a multiple phase life cycle involving re-birth. It is believed that those who do not attain a balance between their good-deeds and misdoing, have to attain re-birth in any living form , to complete the life cycle.

It is also described in this regard that Lord Brahma gave the ruling of death to Yamaraja. Yamaraja was often confused where to send a particular human being, to hell or heaven. He requested Lord Bramha for someone to assit him and Bramha created Chitragupta holding inkpot and book to keep track of every person’s good and bad deed and report to Yamaraj.

The primary duty awarded to Shree Chitraguptjee is to create log of the lives of all living beings, judge their lives based on good-deeds and misdoing, and decide, upon ones death, whether they will attain Nirvana, ie, the completion of their life cycle & redemption from all worldly troubles or, receive punishment for their misdoing in another life form.

Chitragupta Puja, also known as Dawat Puja, is a ritual observed during Diwali festival. Chitragupta Puja 2010 date is November 7. It is celebrated on Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali, in North India. Chitragupta Pooja marks the birthday or Jayanthi of Chitragupta and it is mainly celebrated by Katyastha caste.

On Chitragupta Jayanthi or Chitragupta Pooja, Chitragupta is worshipped with shodashopachar puja by Kayastha people. This puja is also known as Dawat Puja which is the biggest festival for Kayastha caste.

Navratri Trivia Navratras, Navaratri and Navarathri

Navratri is nine nights dedicated to Mother Goddess Shakti in Hindu Religion and in 2011 it will be observed from September 28, 2011 to October 5, 2011.
Navratri means nine nights.

The most popular Navratri is the one held during Ashwin Month (September – October). But there are also three other Navratris in a Hindu calendar year. The most famous among this is the Chaitra Navratri (March – April). The other two Navratris are Magh Navratri and Ashada Navratri.

A popular belief is that the Navratri during Ashwin month (September – October) was started by Sri Ram when he invoked Goddess Durga before going into battle with Ravan. Originally, Mother Goddess was invoked during the Chaitra Month (March – April)

Navratri is also written as Navratras, Navaratri and Navarathri.

The reason for observing Navratri is found in the Markandeya Purana. The chapters 81 to 93 in the Markandeya Purana talks about the slaying of demon Mahishasura or Mahisha by Durga and it is referred as Devimahatmya and is recited during the Navaratri. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

Popular Hindu Tattoos Gods and Symbols in Hinduism

I still vividly remember a small tattoo of Lord Krishna on my grand father’s hand. It was very small, had no designs and was green in color and in local language such tattoo is known as ‘Pacha kuttuka.’ But today body Tattoos of Hindu gods and symbols associated with Hinduism are very popular in the world and are no longer simple figures but are of elaborate designs and many times awe-inspiring.

Lord Ganesha continues to be the most popular Hindu God when it comes to body tattoos. ‘Om’ or Aum’ is the most favorite symbol. Other popular Hindu gods employed in tattoos include Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Hanuman, Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Kali and very rarely Lord Vishnu in Anantha Shayanam form (Lying on five-headed snake Anantha in the Ocean). Among symbols after the ‘OM’ symbol, it is the trident of Shiva and Sanskrit verses or Sanskrit letters. There are also people who opt for the Swastika symbol and rarely the Poorna Kumbha symbol.

India has a strong tradition of tattoo drawing especially in the rural regions. But the tradition was limited mostly to simple drawings, writing names of one’s favorite god or lover in local languages.

The modern tattoo culture around the world has redefined the way in which Hindu gods are depicted in tattoos. The images of Hindu gods have been adopted into the mainstream tattoo drawing by using various techniques developed in the West.

Interestingly, it is not Hindus who are interested in the Hindu tattoos. This is understandable as many Hindus would not prefer tattoos of Hindu Gods on their body. And some Hindus might find it an insult of their culture.

It is mainly westerners and people who are foreign to Hindu culture that finds the tattoos of Hindu gods interesting. What kindles their interest is the elaborate and mind-boggling Hindu religious iconography.

Peeping into Tantric Sex Tantric Sexual Literature

Talk about Tantra and the first thing that come to the mind are sex, magic and witchcraft. Is this the real Tantra? Take a look at Google search. The first page on Google search on ‘Tantra’ is dominated by the word ‘sex.’ But Tantra has more to it than mere sex.

Since modern world associates Tantra with sex, I took a peep into Tantric sexual literature. Several books and articles are available on Tantra and most of them just arouse sexual curiosity. Some confuses the reader. But some western scholars have done detailed study on the subject.

Here I am sharing some of my findings:
  1. It is hard to give a particular period to Tantrism. Most scholars believe it is pre-Vedic. Shiva and Shakti are main gods in Tantrism. They are a symbol and represent the male and female. Some Tantric texts are conversations between Shiva and Shakti.
  2. It has close relation to the modern Advaita philosophy of Shankarachraya, the oneness of all being. So, Tantrism believes that the ‘first life energy’ is present in all of us and we can invoke it in our activities in daily life including sex.
  3. Foreplay is of great importance in Tantric Sex. But Orgasm is given little importance. The period just before orgasm is of utmost importance. Tantric sex tries to maintain that particular effect for a long time – in fact for hours. This is often misunderstood as prolonged orgasm.
  4. The ardhanarishwara, half-man or half-woman, concept is a part of Tantrism. Touch, kissing, breathe all are used to create the energy by the partners. The partners unknowingly join in the cosmic dance – don’t mistake it for real dance. They gaze at each other and keep the eyes open in foreplay and forget about their surroundings. Several different types of touch are practiced in Tantric sex.
  5. There are several rituals, movements, touches and exercises in Tantric sex but it should not be practiced without the help of a knowledgeable person.

Tantrism should not be overlooked just because it talks about sex and contains elements of animism. Tantrism believes that truth can be only experienced through direct realization. One might have read and studied about sex but all this are secondary to the real sexual experience. Real sexual union is not forced; it is not a routine; but a true cosmic dance of creation.

Trikuta Mountain and Story of the Origin of City of Lanka

There are 20 mountains surrounding the four sides of Mahameru. One among them is the Trikuta. As per Puranas the city of Lanka - Ravan's abode - was built on the peak of Trikuta. Mahameru is on the Northern end of the Himalayas whereas Lanka is on the Southern side of Bharat (India). How did this happen? There is a story in Uttar Ramayana which illustrates the reason.

Once a small rift happened between Vayu Deva and Vasuki. They decided to find out who among them is the strongest. Vasuki entangled the Mahameru so that even Vayu was not able to enter the mountain. Vayu got very angry and appeared in the form of a cyclone which started to lash the whole world.

Even Mahameru started to tremble. The Devas became scared and they approached Brahma and Shiva. Together they approached Vishnu. Vishnu called both Vayu and Vasuki and ordered them to stop the fight. As a result, Vasuki straightened out one of the tangles which covered the Trikuta. Immediately, Vayu entered there and threw that part into the Southern Sea, towards the south of India. Viswakarma built a city on the peak of this mountain called Lanka.

Tallest Vishnu Sculpture in World Biggest Idol of Hindu God Vishnu

The tallest sculpture of Hindu God Vishnu is located at Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Park in Bali in Indonesia. This biggest sculpture of Vishnu remains unfinished. The current height of the statue is 23 meters (75 feet).

The original plan was to build a 146 meter gold plated Vishnu riding Garuda on top of an 11 storey entertainment complex. If completed this would have been on the tallest statues in the world. But Bali Hindu religious leaders opposed the commercialization of Hindu Gods as they felt its massive size might disrupt the spiritual balance of the Bali island.

Mandala Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), is a private cultural park on the Bukit Peninsula at the southern end of the island of Bali in Indonesia.

God in Upanishads Teachings Mind in Upanishads

Like oil in sesame seeds, butter in cream, water in the riverbed, fire in tinder; the Self (God) dwells within the soul. Realize that Self through truthfulness and meditation.

Self is everywhere, shining forth from all beings, vaster than the vast, subtler than the most subtle, unreachable, yet nearer that breath, than heartbeat. Eye cannot see it, ear cannot hear it nor tongue utter it; only in deep absorption can the mind, grown pure and silent, merge with the formless truth. As soon as you find it, you are free; you have found yourself; you have solved the great riddle; your heart is forever at peace. Whole, you enter the Whole. Your personal self returns to its radiant, intimate, deathless source.

The All-knowing Self was never born, nor will it die. Beyond cause and effect, this self is eternal and immutable. When the body dies, the Self does not die. If the slayer believes that he can kill and the slain believes that he can be killed, neither knows the truth. The eternal Self slays not, nor is ever slain. Upanishads

He constructed the holy city of Dwarka where Lord Krishna ruled, The Maya Sabha of the Pandavas and was the creator of many fabulous weapons for the gods. This day is often used by manufacturers to pray for their equipment so that it works well and makes profit during the year ahead.

Govardhana Puja. Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura and on this day of Diwali people of North India build cow dung, hillocks, decorate them with flowers and then worship them. This festival is in commemoration of the lifting of Mount Govardhan by Krishna. As per Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honor of Lord Indra and worshiped him after the end of every monsoon season but one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra and asked them to worship cattle instead. Indra in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. People were afraid that the downpour was a result of their neglect of Indra. But Krishna assured them that no harm would befall them. He lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain. This gave him the name Govardhandhari.

It is also on this day that the King Bali would come out of Pathal Loka and rule the earth for one day as per the boon given by Lord Vishnu. Hence, it is also known as “Bali Padyami”.

This day also marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and Vikarama-Samvat – the counting of the Vikram era, was started from this Padwa day.
